SAN ANGELO, Texas — Oilfield companies and gas suppliers have been targeted by a scammer who is posing as a legitimate buyer, using multiple credit cards to buy property.

The San Angelo Police Department says the credit cards the scammer is using eventually decline because of insufficient funds.

The scammer picks up the items with a truck and trailer. After the transactions and the declined payments, businesses are left at a loss. Multiple cards are used in the scam to avoid declined transactions, but then the cards are later reported as stolen.

Reportedly, the scammer uses different phone numbers and often communicates with a heavy accent, making it hard to trace their identity.

The department is urging businesses to take extra precautions when selling goods or services, particularly in the industries targeting by the recent scam. Verify the legitimacy of any transactions and ensure you know who you are dealing with to avoid being a victim in this scam.
