SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office will host a special flag-raising ceremony to kickoff National Police Week, focused on honoring the men and women in law enforcement who have been killed in the line of duty.
The flag-raising will be at 9 a.m. Monday, May 13, in the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office east parking lot, 222 W. Harris Ave.
National Police Week is held May 15-21, with National Police Memorial Day May 15. It was established by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress in 1962 to recognize law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Law enforcement agencies across the nation hold ceremonies to honor fellow law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony at the TGCSO will include an opening prayer, proclamation reading by Tom Green County Judge Lane Carter, presentation of colors by the San Angelo Police Department and Tom Green County Sheriff's Office, reading of the names by TGC Sheriff Nick Hanna, guest speakers Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Ranger Major Wayne Matthews and Congressman August Pfluger.
The event will conclude with the presentation of arms and the playing of "Taps".
