SAN ANTONIO — Seventeen small earthquakes have been officially recorded in the Falls City area, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, over the last week. Within a 15-minute span early on Saturday morning, the region experienced its two strongest yet, felt in the Alamo City and beyond.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that light earthquakes measuring at 4.3 and 4.7 on the Richter Scale were recorded around Falls City at 12:20 and 12:32 a.m., respectively, on Saturday. This month had brought more than 20 earthquakes of varying magnitudes to the small South Texas city, but up until this point none had been stronger than 3.9.
The 4.7 quake was the second-biggest ever felt in the South Texas region, according to earthquaketrack.com, after Karnes City experienced a 4.8-magnitude quake in October 2011. Saturday-morning tremors were reportedly felt as far north as Round Rock, according to the USGS.
Earthquakes of this size tend to only cause minor damage, if they cause any at all. No damage was immediately reported Saturday morning, but San Antonians flocked to social media to make sure they weren't alone in feeling the strange sensation better suited for Southern California than South Texas.
Before the clock hit 1 a.m., two more smaller quakes were reported near Falls City, measuring at 3.7 and 3.3.
