Three events headline second day of rodeo slack

Slack continued with team roping, steer wrestling and tie-down roping. The contenders competed for a chance to make the PRCA performances at the San Angelo Rodeo.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Tuesday, team ropers, steer wrestlers and tie-down ropers competed in slack at the Foster Communications Coliseum.

The top contestants in slack qualify for the PRCA performances at the San Angelo Rodeo. Tuesday, team roping was the first event. With several teams failing to record a time, one competitor said the number of moving parts in the event made it difficult.

“There’s so many minds going together,” team roper Kolby Krieger said. “You’re riding a horse that has a mind of its own (and) it’s got the ability of its own. You’re chasing an animal that has the ability to do whatever it wants to do. It can make any move it wants to, it can do anything it wants to…”

The team ropers ran twice before their scores were combined. Krieger said his first run did not go well but that he hoped his team would have a chance to win money.

The steer wrestlers competed after the team ropers. Palmer, Texas native Cal Wolfe said he hopes to have a chance to perform well at the PRCA event.

“I love this rodeo,” he said. “I’ve been coming here for the last five years now. It’s been okay to me, but I haven’t ever gotten to win the thing, and it’s a great rodeo. The committee is great. They put on one of the best rodeos in the State of Texas, and it’s awesome.”

The rodeo’s first performance is at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Slack will continue Wednesday with the second rounds of steer wrestling and tie-down roping.
