SONORA, Texas — The City of Sonora announced the retirement of Chief of Police Pete Garcia Tuesday.

Garcia's retirement will be effective July 30, and comes after two years of service with the Sonora Police Department. The City says he decided to step down to spend more time with his family and pursue personal interests.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Sonora,” Garcia said in a news release. "I am immensely proud of the dedicated men and women of our police department and the progress we have made together to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. I look forward to seeing the department continue to thrive under new leadership."

Sgt. Donnie Fernandez will be appointed as interim chief of police, effective Aug. 1. He holds a master peace officer license and has nine years of law enforcement experience.

The City of Sonora said it will begin the process of searching for a permanent chief of police in the coming months. In the interim, Fernandez will oversee the department's operations and address public safety concerns.
