Stabbing leads to police standoff on North Howard Street

“Officers arrived to find a 34-year-old male victim who had sustained multiple stab wounds,” SAPD Chief Travis Griffith said at the scene.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A man was stabbed multiple times at a residence near the intersection of North Howard Street and Forest Park Avenue just before 5 p.m. Saturday.

“Officers arrived to find a 34-year-old male victim who had sustained multiple stab wounds,” SAPD Chief Travis Griffith said at the scene.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Shannon Medical Center and is expected to survive.

The incident led to a standoff with the suspect, 48-year-old male identified by police as Ricardo Rico, before he was taken into custody. Police say gas was deployed after more than two hours of attempted contact.

“We do everything we can to get people to come out peacefully, and sometimes that takes motivation,” Griffith said. “It’s a small level of gas [to] make him uncomfortable, almost like pepper spray. We do that in a situation to encourage somebody to come out peacefully."

San Angelo SWAT, along with SAPD's drone team and K-9 units were utilized at the scene.

Rico was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
