Sustainable capitalism the focus of presentation at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Dr. Michael Munger, professor of political science at Duke University, will give a special guest presentation at Angelo State University at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15,  in the Mathematics-Computer Science (MCS) Building Room 100, 2200 Dena Drive.

During his appearance sponsored by the Texas Tech University Free Market Institute at Angelo State University, Munger will also host a book signing that will run from 4:30-5:30 p.m., immediately followed by his presentation. Both events are free and open to the public.

In his presentation based on his book, "Is Capitalism Sustainable?", Munger will explain the benefits and necessity of capitalism in organizing human cooperation at scale, while also considering some of the problems inherent in capitalism. He will also delve into the theories of Karl Marx and the flaws of socialism, the Public Choice branch of political economy and the evaluation of markets and democracy.

Also director of the Philosophy, Politics and Economics Certificate Program at Duke University, Munger's primary research focus is on the functioning of markets, regulation and government institutions. He has also taught at Dartmouth College, the University of Texas and the University of North Carolina, and worked as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission during the Reagan Administration.

Also a past president of the Public Choice Society, Munger is co-editor of The Independent Review and previously served as North American editor of the journal, Public Choice. He has also published several books, including:

  • "The Sharing Economy: Its Pitfalls and Promises" (2021)
  • "Tomorrow 3.0: Transaction Costs and the Sharing Economy" (2018)
  • "Choosing in Groups: Analytical Politics Revisited" (2015)

The TTU Free Market Institute at ASU aims to advance research and teaching related to the free enterprise system and the institutional environment necessary for it to function well, and to support the missions of the ASU Norris-Vincent College of Business. The institute also develops and operates student and public programming for the benefit of ASU students and the San Angelo community.
