PHARR, Texas — More than half a million dollars worth of cocaine was hidden inside a shipment of avocados over the weekend at the border.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr International Bridge decided to take a closer look at a suspicious truck hauling the fruit using K9s as well as imaging on September 13.
They spotted and seized the 16 packets (37.69 pounds) of drugs hidden in the shipment. The alleged cocaine has a street value of more than $503,000.
“Our frontline officers continue to exercise extraordinary vigilance in the cargo environment, utilize the latest technology and that combination yielded this cocaine seizure,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Laredo Port of Entry “This seizure is a reflection of CBP’s ongoing effort to uphold its border security mission and keeping our communities safe.”
CBP seized both the narcotics and tractor trailer. Homeland Security Investigations special agents will be investigating.
