Two Abilene homes destroyed by fire Sunday

The Abilene Fire Department said a third home had moderate damages cause by extension from radiant heat from the fire.

ABILENE, Texas — Two homes in Abilene were lost in a fire Sunday.

According to the Abilene Fire Department, at approximately 7:55 a.m. Sunday, the AFD responded to a residential structure fire in the 1900 block of North 2nd Street.

Arriving crews found a two-story single-family home that was fully involved. A second and then, third alarm were quickly called because of the size of the structure, wind conditions and extension into the neighboring houses.

The house where the fire originated was not livable and had been occupied by transients, the AFD said in a press release. No one was inside the structure at the time of the fire.

The original fire house and a second house, which was also damaged, are both considered total losses.

The second house was occupied by four people who were able to self-evacuate safely and without injury. A third home had moderate damage because of extension from radiant heat.

The American Red Cross is helping with the displaced individuals. The fire remains under investigation and the AFD said estimated value of damage is $140,000.
