UPDATE: Wrong-way driver in August 2024 fatal head-on crash had .180 BAC

TYE, Texas — UPDATE (Sept. 12): The driver in a fatal head-on collision on Interstate 20 had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .180 at the time of the August 2024 crash, Tye Police Chief Christopher Selander said Thursday.

In Texas, you are considered legally intoxicated if your BAC is 0.08. 

According to the Tye PD, Ebinson Jonael Cordova Ramirez, 28, of Portales, New Mexico, was driving the wrong way on I-20 and hit a vehicle driven by Syed Sulman Haider, 32, of Conroe, head-on.

Both drivers were killed in the crash.

UPDATE (Aug. 7): Two drivers killed in a head-on collision in Tye early Sunday have been identified by the Tye Police Department. 

The wrong way driver is identified as Ebinson Jonael Cordova Ramirez, 28, from Portales, New Mexico.

The victim, who was driving the vehicle Ramirez hit was identified as Syed Sulman Haider, 32, of Conroe.

Tye PD says blood test results are still pending.

ORIGINAL STORY: At 2:46 a.m. Sunday, Tye officers were conducting a traffic stop at the eastbound 278 mile marker on I20, when they observed a compact silver Toyota sedan entering the 278 off-ramp, heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of I20.

According to a Tye PD press release, the officers attempted to capture the driver's attention, but the sedan collided head-on with a Dodge Ram pickup, killing both drivers.

Police say the collision involved four vehicles, including an 18-wheeler, which collided with the disabled Dodge Ram and caused damage to another vehicle as debris struck it.

The investigation of this crash is ongoing, and all involved vehicles have been towed from the scene.

Preliminary assessments suggest that alcohol may have been a contributing factor and blood test results are pending, according to the press release.
