SAN ANGELO, Texas — Vitalant is currently facing a critical blood shortage. Donors with all blood types are being asked to give, especially O positive and O negative types.

Patients need help to ensure blood is available at their time of need. As people resume pre-pandemic activities, such as travel, fewer people are giving blood.

For example, Vitalant said it collected about 13,000 fewer blood donations in April 2022 and May 2022 than in the same months last year.

Many people believe that most blood is needed after major disasters. But, daily personal emergencies and ongoing medical needs of thousands of patients require a constant and ready blood supply.

Every day in the U.S., patients in hospitals, surgical centers and emergency treatment facilities need approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells; 5,000 units of platelets; and 6,500 units of plasma.

Blood donors need to be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be healthy. 16-22 year old donors will need to meet additional height and weight requirements. 16 year old donors must present a minor donor permit signed by a parent or guardian – go to www.vitalant.org to find the form.

A blood drive is happening Tuesday and Wednesday at Shannon Medical Center, 120 E. Harris Ave., Legacy Room 1 on the second floor.

  • Tuesday, June 14: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 15: 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Donors will receive their choice of two movie passes; or a $10 Shannon gift shop gift certificate; or a $10 Shamrock gift certificate; plus a coupon from Chick-fil-A.

Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.
