SAN ANGELO, Texas — One of Texas’ most anticipated seasons is here. Saturday marks the start of white-tail deer hunting season. The season will run thru Jan. 2, with hunters heading out in full force and officials are reminding everyone to hunt safely.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department works to follow all measures to avoid people taking an abundance of deer. There is a bag limit of five deer, with no more than two bucks.
“It’s super important to have a license when hunting, you're not allowed to take deer or any wild life without any hunting license. With white tail deer you need to tag the deer when you take it, the tag comes with your license,” Texas Game Warden, Jade Carter, said.
Besides a required hunting license, tagging the deer is also required. A tag is a physical permit hunters carry along and attach once they harvest a deer.
“One of the biggest things that we run into is people either forgetting the tags or using a wrong tag on a mule deer on a white tail deer and vice versa,” Carter said.
Carter advises hunters to stay safe by following the four Cs: capable, competent, courteous and considerate.
“It’s important to know what’s around you, what you're shooting at and letting other’s know where you will be hunting incase of an emergency. Become familiar with the area because accidents do happen whether it’s for medical reasons to firearms reasons where you injure yourself,” Carter said.
The Ballinger Area Chamber of Commerce will kick off hunting season with a Hunter’s Appreciation Dinner & Raffle, from 4 p.m.- 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov.6 at the Ballinger Community Center.
