AUSTIN, Texas — Texas driver license offices are still closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, there will be noticeable changes for Texas drivers once offices reopen.
A new appointment solution system has been in the works for several months, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety's media office. The system will allow customers to schedule appointments online for up to six months in advance.
Appointments will be required for all services, first-time driver licenses, identification cards, renewals or address changes.
Texas DPS is confident the new system will reduce wait time and customers having to wait in line. Customers will have a specific time and date to go into the office. Those who do not have an appointment will be assisted by staff to schedule an appointment for another date, time or location.
The system will launch once offices reopen. Texas DPS did not have an estimated date for when its offices will open to the public.
The DPS media office said the system will reduce wait times, but reminds Texans many transactions can be done online or by phone.
