SAN ANGELO, Texas — With the winter season here, temperatures are dropping - meaning many people will start turning on their heaters at home to stay cozy. However, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind to ensure your heater is safe and in working order.
“The most important thing to do is clean everything off of the furnace as it accumulated during the summertime just to make sure nothing catches on fire, that is a very important aspect,” said Superior Services salesman Donnie Watkins.
Watkins says it’s important to do a quick inspection before running a heater to prevent any problems. Cleaning around the furnace and making sure there are no flammable objects that can become a potential fire hazard.
Another concern when it comes to furnaces are deadly gases like carbon monoxide, especially in closed areas. Moreover, it is extremely important to install carbon monoxide detectors to help detect any poisonous gases.
“You need to have the heat exchangers inspected; you also need to have to go over the venting of the unit to make sure it is vented properly. We do not want any poisonous gases going throughout the house that is something that needs to be checked at least once a year,” said Barry Hooker Heating & Air owner Barry Hooker.
Hooker says it’s important to have a professional inspection at least once a year to make sure there are no signs of carbon monoxide, rust or any other triggers.
