ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Police arrested a registered sex offender last week after they discovered he had contacted a victim through social media.

According to an Abilene Police Department press release, on March 21, Karl Craig, 54, was arrested at his north side residence after police received a report that he was using Facebook Messenger to contact a victim he sexually assaulted in 2000.

Craig is a registered sex offender and was convicted of sexual assault of a child in February 2001. He was sentenced to 20 years; and is required to register as a sex offender annually. He was released on parole in 2016, on mandatory supervision.

APD Cyber Crimes detectives were able to establish communication with Craig’s Facebook account and confirm he was using an account that he had not registered. Cyber Crimes and Abilene Fraud detectives took him into custody after serving a search and arrest warrant at his residence for failure to comply with sex offender registry, a third-degree felony with a $10,000 bond. Craig was also charged with a parole violation with no bond and is currently being held in the Taylor County Jail.
