Remembering Janice Smith, and a camp that brought childhood friends together

Nancy Henderson recalled the days spent with her childhood friend at camp in Buffalo Gap.

BUFFALO GAP, Texas — The Big Country lost a woman who touched the lives of many on April 12, 2019.

Janice Smith of View was the first Little League coach in Abilene. She spent countless hours volunteering for many organizations in Abilene, as well. Smith was also involved with Camp Able of Buffalo Gap and the View Volunteer Fire Department.

Growing up, Smith met a lifelong friend named Nancy Henderson. The pair went to camp together in Buffalo Gap and were inseparable ever since.

"If something happened funny in class and we looked at each other, we blew it, I mean there was no way to stop the laughter,” Henderson said.

They grew up and married, but life brought them back to Buffalo Gap where both women raised their children together.

“We'll cherish the memories of childhood, a happy childhood with her as a best friend,” Henderson said.

Smith’s service will be Wednesday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
