SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo Health Foundation has awarded $992,000 to eight area nonprofits, Board Chair David Lupton announced Thursday.
Since inception, 235 organizations and 847 projects have benefitted from over $63 million in foundation funding, according to a SAHF press release.
Grants Chair Steve Cecil said the following grants encompass community impact, philanthropy, public safety, health care, mental health services and youth development:
Christoval Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $200,000 to renovate the Christoval Community Center. The VFD has provided firefighting services and education to Christoval for over 30 years. They also own and maintain the Christoval Community Center. The center provides meeting space for local nonprofits, community groups and serves as a voting venue.
House of Faith was awarded $25,000 toward summer programing events. House of Faith is a faith-based, community-supported organization "sharing a message of hope through free, weekly after-school programs, summer camps and special events geared toward the children, youth and families of our community." There are currently 1,200 students enrolled in House of Faith programs.
Joseph Thomas Foundation was awarded $15,000 for the San Angelo Financial Assistance Program for Medically Fragile Children. Established in 2008, they work to meet the unique needs of medically fragile children.
Lake Ivie Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $22,000 towards the purchase of a brush truck. They respond to fire and vehicle accidents covering 994 square miles. They serve all of Concho County, Runnels County and the southern part of Coleman County.
Meals for the Elderly was awarded $10,000 to upgrade technology. They have been delivering hot meals once a day to homebound clients for over 47 years. In 2021, they prepared and delivered 243,610 meals to 1,048 unique clients and distributed 15,600 emergency and shelf stable food items in response to the pandemic.
San Angelo Area Foundation was awarded $100,000 for the amplification fund for the San Angelo Gives program to be held in May 2022. This is a one day, 24-hour online fundraising effort to benefit local charities which generated $3.7 million in donations for 210 participating organizations in 2021.
Texas Ramp Project was awarded $20,000 to build wheelchair ramps for residents of the Concho Valley. Texas Ramp Project came to the San Angelo area in 2014. Their mission is to build wheelchair ramps for low-income elderly or disabled community members through referrals from social service agencies. All ramps follow ADA guidelines and are built with volunteer labor.
West Texas Counseling and Guidance was awarded $600,000 for Phase ll expansion of the veterans’ program, suicide prevention efforts and children’s mental health services with the renovation of three floors at the Cactus Hotel. West Texas Counseling and Guidance Center has been providing services to the Concho Valley since the 1970s. In 2021 the Center provided individual counseling for 3,825 clients and 27,139 sessions including those with low incomes or without insurance.
