APD requests automatic license plate readers

Chief Standridge says it will give his officers instant notifications of high profile cases

ABILENE, Texas — Assistant City Manager Michael Rice briefed the media on the Council’s Agenda.

Item number 10 was a request for approval from The Abilene Police Department for 2 mobile automatic license plate readers, along with one trailer for interstate traffic.

"Having that it gives us access to all participating agencies. As well as our info being made available to other agencies." Said Chief Standridge.

Standridge also stated that the database would bring value to the citizens of Abilene along with law enforcement by providing instant updates to high profile cases.

"Amber alerts, silver alerts, blue alerts..
All of that info is put into the system
so any of my sworn officers will receive immediate information" said Standridge.

If the technology is approved, it will be paid for by the City of Abilene totaling a price tag of $82, 286.
