Splash pads considered a safe alternative to beat the heat this Summer

The City of Abilene has five splash pad locations open seven days a week

ABILENE, Texas — According to the city of Abilene,  the Adventure Cove water park will  be closed for the summer due to COVID-19.

Matt Baird, Director of aquatics for the city says  there are five other splash pad locations around the city for families to cool off at.

"Splash pads are pretty much little isolated water playgrounds" said Baird.

According to Baird, pads are located at  Scarborough, Nelson, Sears, Redbud and Stephenson Park, and they are open 7 days a week from 8:30 am 8:30 pm.

Baird says he considers splash pads to be a safe alternative.

“They are fully chlorinated like a normal pool would be so they kill off bacteria there. The water runs through a UV filter which kills off the virus. Both the UV filter and chlorine have been known to kill off the Coronavirus and things like that” said Baird.

According to Baird crews clean up the parks on a daily basis as well as sanitize the public bathrooms. The city still advises families to practice social distancing while visiting the facilities.
