ABILENE, Texas — Doctors across the nation and right here in west Texas are doing their best to keep their communities safe. While also remembering to keep themselves safe while they're at it.
Dr. John Turner of My ER 24/7 in Abilene explains how himself and his staff are using personal protective equipment to minimize risk.
Turner says that protocol is changing every few days.
"All of us in healthcare are worried that we could be asymptomatic..."
"...we are worried that you are going to track it home" said Turner.
Turner and his staff at My Emergency Room 24/7 and Urgent Care intervene with COVID-19 patients before they ever enter the building and potentially put people at risk.
Turner says they have a walkie talkie in the parking lot and if a patient is showing signs to be a strong case for COVID-19 they are taking to an isolated room.
"that room will be down for 3 hours after we are done while we are cleaning it scrubbing it and waiting for the air particles to fall down so we can clean that too" said turner.
Turner says his staff personal protective gear or PPE is vital to his staff which includes the N95 masks.
"These are the masks are healthcare workers are needing to wear to keep the virus out from our mouth and nose while we breathe while at work" said turner.
According to turner the cloth masks with the loops also can be work as a protective measure but they only work to stop the transmission of COVID-19.
