A historic restaurant owned by a well-known family, is closing its doors after more than four decades serving West Texas.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — After being open for 45 years, Zentner’s Daughter Steak House is closing its doors at the end of this year.

Originally, the restaurant opened to San Angelo community in 1974. The restaurant’s specialty is its steaks, but if you’re not into that the restaurant also has a wide array of food to choose from. They serve seafood, chicken fried steak, and burgers, but all good things must come to an end.

Betty Zentner said it was a hard decision to make, but it was best for her and her husband, Bernay’s, health.

The Zentners have a long history in West Texas. John Zentner, Betty’s father, cooked for the Army back in 1918. Throughout the 20th century, he moved around the state and opened some of the greatest steak houses in Texas. His reputation for good, quality food at affordable prices spread across West Texas and beyond. People traveled for miles to get a taste of what he was cooking.

In 1974, his daughter, Betty, opened John Zentner’s Daughter in San Angelo.

A pair of long-time customers openly expressed their feelings about the restaurant closing and said the Zentners took care of them during their 50th wedding anniversary. They said they are sad that Betty and Bernay are retiring after showing the community hospitality.

Zentner’s Daughter Steak House isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a gathering place for weddings, graduation parties and even funerals. People have flocked from every direction to get one last bite as the word of the closure spreads across the Concho Valley.

The hours of operation are still the same except for Christmas Day. The iconic restaurant’s final day open Dec. 31.
