Opinion | Donald Trump 'put a stain on America long before indictment'

Otis Sanford said that he agrees with Republicans that Trump's federal indictment marks a sad day for America, "but not for the reasons they say."

Otis Sanford reporting:

First, I agree with a lot of Republicans that the federal indictment against former president Donald Trump marks a sad day for America but not for the reasons they say.

This indictment, while unprecedented in every respect, is not surprising. We saw this coming from the moment Trump was declared the winner in the 2016 presidential election.

He came into office under a massive cloud of scandal involving shady business deals, housing discrimination and the debacle known as Trump University — all of this was well known and well reported before the election.

Still, just enough disaffected voters in key states decided to take a chance on a guy who had no clue how to govern but who said all the things they wanted to hear, and when an overwhelming number of voters in 2020 said "enough is enough," Trump reacted to losing his reelection bid with conduct that is the subject of this indictment and other ongoing criminal investigations.

Local reaction to the grand jury indictment in Miami is what you might expect — Republicans saying it's a travesty and Democrats saying it's about time.

Politics aside, let's remember that we are a nation of laws — not of one man. Like him or not, Trump put an awful stain on America long before Thursday — all because voters in 2016 wanted something different.

Well, we got it, and it wasn't good.

I'm Otis Sanford, and that's my point of view.
