SAN ANGELO, Texas — As the college baseball season inches closer and closer the Angelo State baseball team is preparing to top one of their strongest seasons in history.
The Rams are coming off a stellar season last year winning 44 games and only losing nine. However, even though the Rams made an appearance in the semifinals of the 2021 NCAA Division II College World Series, players like senior first basemen Aaron Walters still remember the feeling of losing.
"It's kind of bitter because we know we should've won it. We had a lot of bad breaks in carry and it means we just have to work harder and keep our heads down," Walters said.
Walters was selected as Preseason Player of the Year after finishing second in highest batting average in the conference at .410. Senior grad student Carson Childers received honors as well being named Preseason Pitcher of the year.
"It's nice to be recognized but at the same time it doesn't mean a whole lot. I got to come out and do the same thing as last year except from a different position. I have to help us get back in the dug out so our number one offense can score some runs."
Kevin Brooks, head coach of ASU men's baseball team discusses how his team will transfer their energy from last season to this season.
"You know it's a challenge, that was a really great group and special team. Luckily we have a lot of guys back off that team, their leadership is going to be key. They just got to go out and play, they don't have to be different guys, they just need to be the same guys they've been throughout their career," Brooks said.
Although every baseball season is different, Brooks believes his team will develop a formula that will help them win many games.
The Rams will return to action this Saturday at home as they take on UT Tyler in a four-game series at Foster Field. The game will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on both Sunday and Monday.
