Central senior Jaylen DeHoyos shares love for powerlifting

DeHoyos will compete in the 6A state competition in Frisco on Wednesday.

Jaylen Dehoyos, a senior at Central High, has fallen in love with powerlifting. Powerlifting is a sport that's not easy for most but comes second nature to DeHoyos.

DeHoyos began lifting in the 9th grade, and since then she uses every chance to encourage others.

"Most of the time when you do start powerlifting or a sport where you don't have that much courage from others, I just say to find a passion and go for it," DeHoyos said.

It's been four years since DeHoyos decided to go for it. Her journey has been rewarding and she serves as the proof that girls can lift heavy just like anyone else.

"I think it's okay to have a woman that is strong. There's nothing wrong with it at all. There's some that get so discouraged and they don't want to work out at all. It's okay if you want to be strong and built," DeHoyos said.

There's a lot that goes into powerlifting like making sure you have proper nutrition, recovery, and most importantly, support.

"When family shows up for you it just feels great. No matter if it's small. That doesn't mean anything. It means something to you because you have that family and support show up for you everyday," DeHoyos said.

DeHoyos is now looking ahead to the 6A state meet where she plans to bring home the gold.
