SAN ANGELO, Tx - After spending 33 years as a basketball head coach Robert Chaney decided to close the book on his coaching career. He spent the last seven years leading the Lake View Chiefs on the North side of San Angelo. The former head Chief said it was just the right time to walk away. He'll finally have time to enjoy some other occasions that don't revolve around the hardwood.
"I will have more time at Christmas, have more time at Thanksgiving which I haven't had in 33 years," said Chaney.
While his job revolved around a win-loss record, Chaney considered himself a teacher of the game and will miss teaching those lessons.
"I really enjoyed teaching the game to kids and see them progress as it went along," said Chaney.
One player coach Chaney had the chance to coach was his very own son Ryan Chaney.
"Sometimes it was tough, but overall I believed in him. It was fun to watch him do some of the things he did, and I was very proud," said Chaney.
Coach Chaney does leave behind a team with a promising player Timothy Aguero entering his senior year. The Chiefs missed out on the post season but there's a bright future for Lake View.
"I think this year was just growing pains. Tim had that experience, but the other players didn't have it as much as he did. They got a taste of it this year, and I think they'll be very competitive next year," said Chaney.
Now that his holidays won't be packed with game plans or his off season packed with camps and schedule making the old ball coach will have some free time. He does plan to keep a busy schedule.
"I get to go watch Ryan play a lot more. I'll help my wife with her real estate business. Plus I love to go down to the coast and fish a little bit."
