Central baseball team honors fallen teammate to open district play

The Bobcats and the San Angelo community stood together in honoring their fallen teammate, Brandon Garza, on Thursday as they opened district play.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Central Bobcats opened district play on Thursday night, taking on Midland High School. Opening a slate of district games is already a reason to get up for a game, but the Concho Valley also declared this game would honor the Cats' fallen teammate, Brandon Garza.

The Bobcats goals are outlined in front of them, and they said their purpose is clear. They know they must go on a run to make the playoffs this season, and Head Coach Stan Gideon said he believes their time is now.

"I think the time is now. You know, I think our approach is, 'Why Wait?' Let's jump in there and make a mark right now. I know these guys want to hoist a trophy at the end of the year, and it is up to each individual. I think they are ready," Gideon said.

The Cats have their sights on district play to close out their 2023-24 campaign, and should they clinch a playoff berth, it will be their first time touching a playoff field since the 2018-19 season.
