SAN ANGELO, Texas — Just two days after claiming their first district championship in 21 years, the Central High School girls’ basketball team is back to work as they look ahead to the playoffs.
Head coach Arsenio Geter is in his second season with the program and says he’s been enjoying his time leading this team.
“It's been a blast. I love these girls, we have a good time. You know, we talk about that quite a bit, like how much we have fun together. I think that's a big part of our team bonding and how we get to play together, which leads to all a lot of wins,” Geter said.
The Lady Cats are on a three-game winning streak and sit at 22-11 overall. During their last regular season game, senior Neveah Hearne hit a three-pointer, making her one of the few high school athletes a part of the 1,000-point club.
“The funny thing is on my free throws that I had before that, I thought those were my last two points. I missed the last one because I got a little nervous. When I made my three, I noticed everyone was cheering me on,” Hearne said.
Coaches and players say they’re enjoying the journey of competing for a state championship, but it hasn’t been an easy ride.
“The toughest obstacle was when we played Frenship, and then having to win the rest out because everyone was out to get us, and we just kept going,” point guard Saedye Moreno said.
The Lady Cats will take on El Paso Franklin in the bi-district round at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Andrews High School.
