Police investigating murder in Brownwood

58-year-old Joe Garner Caine was booked with a bond set at $250,000.
A 13-year-old Northeast Texas boy has been charged with capital murder in the June shooting deaths of his younger brother and their father.

BROWNWOOD, Texas — At approximately 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, 9-1-1 operators received a call from a female who reported that her father just stabbed her husband and she was driving the victim to Hendricks Medical Center-Brownwood for treatment.

Brownwood Police officers were dispatched to the Hendricks ER as well as the address reported by the caller, a residence in the 2400 block of Ave B.

Corporal Jessica Risdon arrived at the ER and identified the caller as well as the victim, 42-year-old Tony Dewayne Roberts.

PCpl. Risdon learned that all of the subjects involved were at the residence on Ave B when an argument broke out between the caller and her sisters. Roberts attempted to intervene in the fight, prompting her father, 58-year-old Joe Garner Caine, to exit the residence and confront Roberts, allegedly stabbing him.

Caine was positively identified and interviewed by detectives with the Brownwood Police Department.

Roberts was given emergency medical care but succumbed to his injury at Hendricks Medical Center Brownwood.

A warrant for murder was requested and issued out of 35th District Court, signed by Judge Mike Smith.

Cain was then contacted at his residence and arrested for the warrant. He was booked into the Brown County Jail with a bond set at $250,000.

NOTE: A BPD press release stated Roberts was flighted to UT Dallas. A correction was issued stating he died in Brownwood. This story has been updated from the original version.
