Wall HS football coach Houston Guy hopes to leave behind legacy

Guy was informed in December the district would be moving in a different direction for the head coach position.

WALL, Texas — It’s been a historic stint for Wall High School football coach Houston Guy. After 17 seasons with the program, Guy will be resigning this week.

Guy was informed by the district before Christmas that it would be moving in a different direction. Although his time leading the Hawks has come to a halt, Guy hopes he left behind an indelible mark.

“When we started it wasn’t good. For a program to start where we did and finish where we did, I’m very proud of that. We made the third and fourth round of the playoffs something that was expected every year,” Guy said.

The Hawks finished the 2023 season 11-3 overall and 5-0 in district play. The team's tough 31-12 loss against Canadian in the quarterfinals marked Guy’s last game as head coach. Reflecting on his last season and all the ones that came before, Guy is left with memories to fill a lifetime.

“You don’t realize it’s your last year until they tell you it is. It was another year of great kids and parents. We were able to accomplish a lot and we got back to the quarterfinals. These kids persevered quite a bit, we had two losses that were tough during the season, but you know they bounced back and continued to work. That’s all you can ask,” he said.

Guy believes there is still air left in the tank and wants to continue pursuing his coaching career. The last 17 seasons helped him become a better coach and he is grateful to have served it at Wall.

“The community at Wall has been phenomenal. The support that we get is second to none. When you look at the stands on Friday night and you see usually, we have twice as many fans as the opposing team that says a lot about the support from the community,” Guy said.

Guy said he plans to submit resignation papers sometime this week.
