WALL, Texas — It is a new year with a new coach for the Wall Hawks baseball team, but even with a few new faces, the results have remained the same with a 7-1 start through their first eight games.
With Coach Jeremy Gordon superseding the legendary Jason Schniers, he understood the shoes he had to fill were big, but he says he would not have it any other way.
"I do not ever want to be discussed in the same breath as Coach Schniers, because he was a legend and he is who I strive to be like. I have too much respect for him to ever place myself in that conversation but I will say, I have been wanting to do this for a long time," Gordon said.
The athletes under Gordon have also bought in to the "unfinished business" motto that was once brought in by Schniers, but is also embraced by Gordon as well. The Hawks finished last season as state runners-up and third baseman Will Scherr believes this year, it is all about getting the job done.
“It was a heartbreaking loss. We wanted to get that last win, but we did not and now we have a new coach and that is our motto this year. We want to finish this business (this season),” Scherr said.
Scherr, Gordon and the rest of the Wall Hawks understand the long season ahead of them, but with a 7-1 start under their belt, they say they are as confident as ever ahead of their district matchup against Jim Ned Tuesday night.
