Dak Prescott was not at practice, but the reason is precautionary, Cowboys say

The Dallas Cowboys QB was noticeably absent from practice on Friday, but the team says he just took the day off as a precaution.

OXNARD, Calif. — When the Dallas Cowboys took to the practice field Friday in Oxnard, a crucial piece to the team was noticeably absent: Dak Prescott.

The team told WFAA that Prescott wasn't at practice due to "right ankle soreness" and he just took the day off as a precaution.

Prescott's status in camp is just latest of eye-grabbing incidents to come out of Cowboys camp. A photo of Prescott wearing a walking boot on that right ankle went viral in July.

Back in 2020, Prescott broke his right ankle and had to undergo surgery. Prescott told the Star-Telegram when the photo viral it’s “the same ankle, same issues” he had been dealing with.

However, Prescott also told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at the time, “I’m great” and that the boot was for precautionary reasons because “the last time I went deep sea fishing my (ankle) swole up.”

On Thursday, Jerry Jones made headlines with this comments regarding another notable absence: CeeDee Lamb. Jones' comments about Lamb's absence amid contract negotiations was the talk of social media Thursday night.

"I don't expect not to have CeeDee Lamb [when the season starts], but this camp has given target opportunities for the people who need it most, and that's the ones who are not proven like CeeDee," Jones said.

When asked about his confidence about Lamb suiting up for the start of the season on Sept. 8, Jones said this: "Well I don't know about that, but we're getting great work, making real progress and, I don't think, losing a step where we're at now."

When Jones was asked if he plans on signing Lamb before the preseason kicks off Sunday, he responded simply.

"No," Jones said.

When asked why he said they won't get the contract done by Sunday, Jones said jokingly "I don't have a sense of urgency about getting it done."

CeeDee Lamb responded to Jones' comments on his urgency on X, formerly Twitter, with a simple "lol."

Prescott, like Lamb, is entering the last year of his current deal. Linebacker Micah Parsons is also entering the final year of his contract. Prescott and Parsons have been in Oxnard.

The offseason has been defined by a lack of moves by the Cowboys front office, despite Jones' comments about going "all in" on the 2024 season.
