Motorcyclist airlifted to Lubbock after fiery crash early Thursday morning

A 36-year-old San Angelo man was airlifted to a Lubbock hospital after the motorcycle he was driving crashed and burst into flames near the Central Fire Station.

A 36-year-old San Angelo man has been airlifted to a Lubbock-area hospital for injuries sustained in an early Thursday morning crash outside the San Angelo Fire Department's Central Fire Station.

The San Angelo Police Department said in a press release Thursday that at approximately 1 a.m., police were dispatched to West 1st and North Koenigheim streets for the report of a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle.

Arriving officers found fire department personnel assisting the driver, Luis Chavez Padilla, who was suffering from burns and incapacitating injuries.

Padilla was transported by ambulance to Shannon Medical Center for initial treatment and was later airlifted to a Lubbock-area hospital, according to the release.

A preliminary crash investigation shows Padilla was traveling north on Koenigheim at a high rate of speed, when his motorcycle left the east side of the roadway and collided with a light pole, located just outside the Central Fire Station.

The collision caused the motorcycle to burst into flames. Police say alcohol was likely a contributing factor to the crash.
