SAN ANGELO, Texas — As the holiday season is in full swing, many people are going on vacation. Keeping yourself and your home safe are top priorities while out of town.
“If you're traveling and you're not going to be home for an extended period of time, make sure you understand your house will be empty. If you could have a trusted neighbor, family or close friend that you trust watch over your home to make sure everything looks okay,” Abilene Police Department Public Information Coordinator, Rick Tomlin, said.
Tomlin said it’s important to have emergency contacts saved to your phone in case an accident occurs, they are the first ones reached.
“Let loved ones know where you're going, what time you're leaving and if you have any issues that way they know where you're located,” Tomlin said.
While it may be tempting not to post travel updates on social media, Angelo State University Police Det. Sr. Sgt. Orlando Villarreal said it’s best to keep any vacation plans offline. Posting location and vacation plans puts you at risk for home theft.
“Try to refrain from posting any type of vacation ideas or destinations on social media, wait until afterwards if possible or at least don't post how long you're going to be away," Villarreal said.
Villarreal recommends anyone that is planning to travel soon to make sure valuables are protected.
“You also want to make copies of any important documents that you have so your passports, insurance, drivers license and keep a copy with yourself and with another family member or friend that is away. Also just keep friends and families updated with where you're at and where you're going,” he said.
Local law enforcement says it’s important to take the necessary precautions in order to keep yourself and your home safe.
