SAN ANGELO, Texas — April 14 is National Gardening Day. This day marks the beginning of spring planting season and is when many gardeners pick up a shovel and get to work planting beautiful flowers and plants.
However, the weather throughout West Texas is far from ideal gardening weather. Highs Tuesday will struggle to reach the mid-50s with clouds remaining thick until the afternoon hours and a cool northeasterly breeze.
Lows Wednesday morning will dip down to near freezing. Locations north of I-20 may dip just cold enough to experience a light freeze. This is aided by light breezes expected Wednesday morning which will allow any frozen particles to remain on any plants already in the ground.
Because of this, many are worried about starting their spring planting season or about plants already planted. Tommy Olive, owner of Olive's Nursery in San Angelo, said not to worry:
"It is time to plant. It could freeze. It could hail. It could get severely hot. No one knows. But it's usually beautiful for the next month. So plant now and expect a good harvest of food and flowers."
When asked about the potential for freezing temperatures, Olive said,
"It can frost above freezing. So a cover will prevent frost damage because it keeps the moisture off."
If you are concerned about these temperatures, wait about another two days. Temperatures will be much warmer come Thursday and even warmer next week.
