Severe Weather Awareness Week - how to prepare for weather hazards

Severe Weather Awareness Week is dedicated to learn about different weather hazards.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — It’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, a time to learn about severe weather hazards and to make sure you're prepared for whatever storm may come your way.

Each day throughout the week will be a different theme from preparedness information, lightning, tornadoes, wind and hail, flash flooding, review and supplemental information.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Michael Decker explained what to do in case of a severe weather watch.

“Just be prepared, you may want to make sure you have flashlights in case your power is out, you may want to do a review of your plans,” Decker said.

He suggests planning ahead and finding a secure location in your home.

“Wherever the safest room in your house is and make sure everyone is in the same boat in case severe weather does break out in your area,” Decker said.

However, once a severe weather warning is issued, it’s important to act fast and take shelter immediately.

“If it looks like that storm is going to be affecting your area, certainly at that point take some action, stay away from windows. I know a lot of people will look outside and I've done the same thing of course I'm a meteorologist here but we’ve had some cases here where people have been cut by breaking glass on windows,” Decker said.

Decker said flooding is one of the most common weather hazards in the Concho Valley. He explains what to do incase there is flooding in your area.

“One of them is to make an alternate way of getting to work or going to where you want to go.  A lot of times it's just to wait a half hour or so around here, a lot of times it doesn't last too long. You're better off just waiting in your building before heading off where you want to go. Waters come down pretty quickly when they come pretty quickly,” Decker said.

Ultimately, it’s important to always be prepared with an action plan for severe weather conditions.
