TEXAS, USA — Reports are coming in on precipitation totals from this week's winter storm. Most of West Texas saw accumulation, but the highest totals were in the Big Country.
Now that the winter storm has passed, the sun will be making its grand return. Friday afternoon, we will just barely pass the freezing mark, but the additional sunshine may help us kickstart some melting.
Unfortunately, any melting that occurs Friday evening will refreeze overnight and lows will dip into the teens.
The back and forth of melting and refreezing poses a new travel concern: black ice. Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that is hard to see. Common locations to find black ice include bridges, overpasses and spots on the road shaded by trees or other objects (such as tall buildings).
This weekend, we'll see daily highs get warmer and warmer, but overnight lows will continue to dip to subfreezing levels. Whatever doesn't completely melt during the day (especially shaded areas) will continue to refreeze at night. Because of this, you should continue using caution on roadways as you travel this weekend.
