SAN ANGELO, Texas — A major winter storm is expected to move into the Lone Star State this weekend, with heavy snow and dangerous travel expected. Winter storm watches have been issued for a good portion of the state, with more watches and warnings expected.
Locations as far south as the northern Houston metro area are under the threat of winter precipitation, something rarely ever seen.
In our local area across West Texas, the storm will start as rain overnight Saturday into Sunday. Rain is expected to transition to snow, particularly across the Big Country by early Sunday morning.
By the afternoon, rain should transition to mostly snow across the majority of the area. Freezing rain and sleet may be seen for a short duration, but no ice accumulations are expected. Locations along I-10 may remain rain throughout much of the event.
The heaviest snow, and the heaviest snow totals, will be in a very narrow area across our northeastern communities. Slight variation in the track of the low-pressure may move higher snow totals in a certain direction. As of Friday afternoon, here is the latest snow total forecast:
