North Chadbourne Street repaving finishes ahead of San Angelo Rodeo

Construction began on Jan. 8 before pausing for the San Angelo Stock Show. The work will pause again when the San Angelo Rodeo begins.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Construction crews have completely repaved North Chadbourne Street weeks before the San Angelo Rodeo is set to begin.

The project will continue in the coming months, but the majority of the work is finished. Crews are working to raise manhole covers back to street level and lay concrete to secure them. Construction paused during the San Angelo Stock Show and will pause again when the Rodeo begins.

The Rodeo is expected to bring a significant amount of traffic to Chadbourne Street. Rodeo Manager Josh Hilton said the finished work will make things easier for visitors.

"To have a smooth, safe way to and from the Coliseum for our patrons is huge," he said. "It will do nothing but make that a more seamless transition for each performance and each day that we have the show open."

Patrick Frerich, the City's director of operations, said the difference in the road's quality before and after construction is obvious to anyone who has driven on it. The City chose to use a process called full-depth reclamation, which Frerich said significantly accelerated the project's timeline.

"It's been really successful. We get an amazing product," he said. "We get something that'll be sustained for several decades at about a third of the cost of the equivalent full-depth reconstruction."

The San Angelo Rodeo begins April 5. The Rodeo and its midway carnival will last through April 21.
