SAN ANGELO, Texas — For many individuals, reading starts as young as six or seven years old.

However, some might experience challenges that make it difficult sounding out words and comprehending deeper meanings.

For this reason, the Adult Literacy Council of the Concho Valley offers services including courses on English as a second language, health literacy, dyslexia and more.

On Oct. 19, 20, 21 and 23, the ALC is hosting its annual book sale with one goal in mind: "Let's read!," director Marilynn Golightly said.

Years ago, Golightly's grandmother worked alongside American missionary Frank Laubach to create the ALC in San Angelo.

"And literacy started in the mission faith," Golightly said. Laubach's essential goal was to "teach people to read so they know what to believe."

Now, the ALC has turned into a vibrant organization, with the book sale offering selections from Western stories to travel guides and even 1,000-piece puzzles.

Preview night is set for Oct. 19 at Providence Baptist Church, 810 Austin St., and paperback books are priced at 50 cents while hard covers are $1 each.

"All of these are donated books, every book here is donated," Golightly said. "These are all volunteers through AARP or through the ASU honors program."

Some volunteers return every year to help organize the event and the newest selection of donated books have been put out on display.

Previously, the council hosted its sale near Concho Valley Transit. This is the first year in the new location and Golightly wants to spread the message about the event.

Looking forward, she is also considering organizing a second book sale near the holidays, though exact plans have not yet been set.

For classic novels, scrapbooks, records and more, why not support the ALC?
