TOM GREEN COUNTY, Texas — The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office announced in a press release afternoon the move from the former Tom Green County Jail, 122 W. Harris Ave., was completed Tuesday.
The move follows a five-year building construction project at 4382 US Hwy 277N. The new facility is designed to house 552 inmates, an increase from the previous jail capacity of 449 inmates.
The move was several months in the planning and was executed without any significant incidents, according to the release. More than 400 inmates were successfully housed within the new facility.
Tom Green County Sheriff's Office jail staff and members from the patrol division, criminal investigation division and the jail transport division began the process at 4 a.m. Tuesday, and completed the last delivery of inmates at approximately 3:55 p.m.
The old jail facility opened in 1977, and underwent two renovations that carried the facility through Tuesday.

Visitation at the new jail facility is contingent on orders from Gov. Greg Abbott regarding COVID-19.
Video visitation is in the process of being set up and is expected to be up and running in the next few days, the release said. Inmates are able to make calls from within the facility, as of Tuesday.
