HAWLEY, Texas — Texas Tech has another standout athlete from West Texas on the way, as wide receiver Chandlin Myers from Hawley High School officially signed his letter of intent to play for the school Wednesday morning.
Myers verbally committed to play for the Red Raiders in March of this year, but the moment his pen hit the paper is when it started to hit him. It was at that moment he knew he would be playing for his dream school.
"It (signing to play at TTU) has always been my dream. I remember playing NCAA14 (the video game). I would create my little character. I'd create him on tech and stuff. It is just unbelievable. This whole moment is unbelievable," Myers said.
Signing to play for Tech has been a dream come true, but for his parents Brandi and Donnell Jenkins, it was his destiny.
"That is where he is going to go (Texas Tech). They are passing school and he is going to be a receiver and that will be a perfect fit for him. That is what we have always said. We actually had a dream of him going to Tech. He has always had the ability. When the offer came, we were happy and excited but not surprised. We knew it," the Jenkins family said.
Myers high school football career ended with his fourth straight 10-plus win season and a state championship in 2022. Above all of that, his head coach throughout his tenure as a Bearcat, Mitch Ables, believes his signing day can be a dose of motivation for the next generation.
"This is big for our program. They know what is expected of them now. We are going to set those expectations high and seeing this will have these guys working hard," Ables said.
With his sights now set on his future home in Lubbock, Myers plans on putting the little town of Hawley, which boasted around 600 total population in the 2010 census, on the map at the D-1 football level.
"Everybody who has been supporting me this whole way, I do not want to let them down. I will go as far as I can, and do what I am meant to do for myself, my family, and this community," Myers said.
Myers will join Albany's Adam Hill next season as two of the freshmen signed to the Red Raiders in 2024 from West Texas. Both, plan on making a big impact in 2024 and beyond.
